Auction Description

Led Zeppelin : Physical Graffiti A1/B5/C1/D1

This FINAL UPGRADE album double album plays to a standard that you only find on vinyls that have hardly been played.  The clarity and definition throughout is sensational!  In fact the previous owner advised me that they had only been played the once in order to record to tape!  I purchased a number from him and to say he preserved them well is an understatement!

The iconic cover as can be seen from the photos and my grading is the most impressive I have seen in a long time.  It has hardly any of the wear that you so often see on the edges and corners.  As per all the first and early pressings it has the 'red lettering' on the spine and the 'Swan Song' London address on the back cover

This one is known as the first variant on the first pressing with the B5 matrix on S2 and there is no Warner logo (W) on the labels which is symptomatic with the first/early pressings also.

Visual grading

The vinyls are stunning and rarely have I seen them as pristine as this.  They both have a beautiful jet-black glossy sheen and in all honesty look 'as new'.  I have looked under various lights and all I can detect are a handful of the faintest sleeve removal hairlines that you could imagine.  Barely visible!  There are no marks or scratches and it is obvious they have hardly ever been removed from their original sleeves.  There is no spindle wear and I have no reason to dispute what the original owner told me i.e. that as far as he remembers he only ever played them once!  The run out grooves and labels are also in pristine condition.  Absolutely stunning!

Play grading

S1 plays with stunning precision throughout.  From the opening grooves on 'Custard Pie' to the fade out on 'In My Time Of Dying' the audio is of an incredibly high standard with no clicks or pops.  'The Rover' is nigh on perfect with only a minimal hint of light static on the fade out which is also the case with the first track.  The definition of the audio on the classic 'In My Time Of Dying' is so impressive and nowhere is this more obvious than on the long heavier section.  It is superb and quite simply plays 'as new'!  There are some light dust ticks on the quieter opening section but there is certainly no intrusive 'background'.  It is fair to say the majority of the side plays with Mint quality audio.

S2 is of the same 'high end' standard if not better!  'Houses Of The Holy' has no static or worse (!) on the intro and then plays as Mint with no interference and I am pleased to say 'Trampled Under Foot' is of the same quality with only a couple of mega light ticks at the end of the fade out.  I cannot fault the clarity and depth and as stated it is clear this vinyl has hardly ever been on a turntable!  The classic 'Kashmir' ends the side with audio that can only be described 'as new'.  I cannot remember when I last heard such power, clarity and definition on this track.  It is absolutely stunning and Mint is no exaggeration.  There is also no inner groove distortion towards the end which is a rarity and no 'background' on the fade out either.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is just a minor hint of very light static on the 'In The Light' intro and soon disappears anyway.  This 'Eastern' intro plays with wonderful precision and again there are static ticks, clicks or pops and grades as Near Mint the playback is so good.  As the vocal begins there is no decrease in quality and the same applies to the remainder of the track.  Again I just cannot believe the definition of the sound here.  Each note is 'crystal clear' clean and it's like the vinyl was released only yesterday not 44 years ago.  It is 100% stunning and the once more the fade out plays with perfect precision.  'Bron-Yr-Aur' and 'Down By The Seaside' both play as Mint with no interference of any kind.  What follows is one of the finest version of 'Ten Years Gone' that you are ever likely to hear!  The quiet intro is sublime and has only a couple of barely audible dust ticks.  This really is audio of the highest quality and from then on it continues to play with immaculate clarity and power.  I don't think I've heard the quieter sections play so...quietly!  The end section has a little inner groove distortion perhaps but it is only minimal.

'Night Flight' on S4 has two second of static on the intro and then plays 'as new' right to the final note.  'The Wanton Song' and 'Boogie With Stu' are of the same 'high end' standard and yes have no 'background' of any kind.  They are both Mint without a doubt.  It's the clarity that really stands out here again.  There is impressive clarity and then there is clarity such as this!  An example of this is on the 'spoken' 'Black Country Woman' intro which has no 'background' at all.  Just pure unadulterated Mint audio.  The remainder also plays with faultless precision.  'Sick Again' ends this stunning album with, you guessed it, superb quality from the first groove to the last.  The power is tangible here and that brief section where Bonham goes ballistic is incredible!  Stunning power and no distortion at all.  In fact the entire track plays without distortion and once more you're thinking 'has this track ever been played?!'

In summary this FINAL UPGRADE album plays with a clarity and power that is unrivalled in my opinion.  There is not one single click or pop across all four sides and next to no static also.  One look at both records and you are left in no doubt that this is one beautifully preserved double album and I do not think I have seen better.  Not only that but the cover is in fantastic condition with hardly any of the wear that you so often see.  A superb 'package' for sure.

The Cover

The iconic cover may well the best version I have seen on such an early pressing.  As any collector knows the edges and corners are notoriously difficult to keep clean but here they are in exemplary condition.  There are just two tiny 'rub' marks on the side with the 'red lettering' and the corners themselves have barely any wear.  The top edges are incredibly clean with none of the feathering that you so often see.  The 'windows' are all in perfect order with no tears and the front and back covers have no marking which is so rare especially for the back cover!  It is also still very strong and robust which can only be because it has been hardly handled.

This is truly a fantastic example of this cover and so rarely seen as 'clean' as this.

Two Page Folded Insert and Custom Inners

The folded insert with the song titles and credits is near perfect and again has hardly ever seen the light of day!  It has none of the spotting/staining that you so often see and there is only a miniscule amount of creasing on the top edges.

The two custom inners are quite simply 'as new' with no wear at all.  They have the code 'SSK 89400/A' for record 1 and 'SSK 89400/B' for record 2.

The Labels

They have lost none of their original colour and remain in perfect order with no marking or spindle wear.
