Auction Description

The Beatles : Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band : 1st Mono Pressing with 'Fourth Proof' Cover

This is one of their now most collectable albums as it comes with the very rare 'Fourth Proof' gatefold.  This was the final version of the various prototypes when the cover was being designed and this 'test run' has the inverted 'Fourth Proof' text in the top right corner and the index number 'AR D1321' next to the spine, both on the inside.

The cover itself is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear and as can be seen the spine is still 100% legible.

First Mono 1/1 pressing with on Yellow/Black label.  'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' etc printed around the perimeter edge and 'Sold in U.K. subject to resale price conditions' also on labels.  KT tax code stamp on S2 label.

 Visual grading

Overall this vinyl is very clean when you consider its rarity and still has a strong glossy lustre.  S1 is in lovely condition with only a small number of very faint hairlines.  S2 does have two very tiny 2mm scratches and you wouldn't see them unless you knew they were there!  There is also a thin longer scuff type mark but it has no affect on the audio.  Overall though it is still in excellent condition and the vast majority of it is very clean indeed with not many hairlines at all.  There is not very much spindle wear and the labels and run out grooves are also both very clean.

Play grading

'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' has only minimal light static on the 'audience' intro and as soon as the vocal begins the audio plays very clearly with barely any 'background'.  There are no clicks, pops or crackle and barely any static.  It is a very impressive and there is no distortion on the top end.  'With A Little Help From My Friends' plays with stunning Near Mint audio from start to finish.  The clarity is superb and again there is only a minimal amount of mega light static in the background every now and then.  There is a little more static on the 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' intro but it does not intrude on the audio and still plays with excellent clarity for a mono record.  The remainder plays very clearly and with very little static.  It displays a warmth and depth that is so rarely heard on these mono pressings.  The long fade out is stunning giving you a good idea of the clarity on offer here.  'Getting Better' again has some static on the intro and then only light static for the remainder.  It is largely very quiet and in the background but is perhaps a little more obvious on this track although, I hasten to add, there are no clicks or pops.  I do sit very close to the speakers so this may be one reason why I can hear it and of course don't forget this is a mono record being played through a stereo system.  'Fixing A Hole' is stunning and plays with Near Mint clarity all the way through.  With barely any static this is a superb version and the fade out is nigh on perfect.  As is always the case 'She's Leaving Home' always has some 'background' on the first mono pressings when other tracks do not for some reason.  This can't just be due to it being played through a stereo system, it must be how it was recorded also.  Whilst there is more static it still plays very well and...no clicks or pops!  'Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite' ends the side with less static and for the vast majority plays very clearly.  The Wurlitzer sections are stunning!

'Within You Without You' plays with tremendous clarity and depth and there is only 2/3 seconds of very light static on the intro.  The remainder of this psychedelic number plays with such superb definition I doubt it has been played very much at all.  The separation is 'high end' i.e. you can hear each note so clearly and it plays practically 'as new' and is Near Mint without doubt.  A fantastic start to S2.  'When I'm Sixty-Four' has light static here and there but again nothing intrusive really.  Let's not forget this vinyl is part of a mega rare 'Fourth Proof' cover and this vinyl is better than so many I have seen.  'Lovely Rita' is very impressive.  With just one very faint click the depth of the sound is stunning and plays with a wonderful deep bass sound.  This track regularly plays with distortion but that is not the case here and it's incredible to think this record is over 50 years old!  'Good Morning, Good Morning' has only a little static on the 'cockerel' intro (!) and then continues to play with very clear audio although sadly there are a small number of clicks in the middle section due to the very small scratch that can be seen.  Thereon it plays superbly with no other issues.  The 'Sgt. Pepper's' reprise is absolutely stunning and plays as well as the day when released back in '67!  It is equal to any other Mint- version I have heard and is immaculate from beginning to end with no distortion at all.  The classic intro is just superb!  The power is incredible and the rhythm section sounds so good.  The acoustic intro on the classic 'A Day In The Life' has superb clarity and then plays with great sound and very little static.  The first crescendo section is very impressive, it builds so powerfully and there is no obvious distortion at all.  The bass is again so strong and the music very 'clean' again.  The next section is 'high end' and has barely any 'background' and plays with great power and depth.  It is only on the final verse where there is a little distortion perhaps and 5/6 clicks although these are 'buried' in the loud music somewhat.  The final crescendo sections is mind-blowing and plays loud and true and with barely any distortion.  There is a little static on the final long piano note but when isn't there!

In summary this mega rare 'Fourth Proof' issue plays very well for the majority but with some light static here and there and a couple of issues on S2.  In saying that apart from a couple of mega tiny scratches the vinyl is in excellent condition as is the gatefold which is obviously the most collectable 'part' of this album.  The Cut Out is almost 'as new' and rarely the red 'fool' inner sleeve is super clean and has no splits!

The Gatefold

Trying to find one of these rare 'Fourth Proof - Patents Pending' G&L gatefolds in decent condition is becoming increasingly difficult so I am pleased to say this one is generally in excellent condition but with a little shelf wear.  The edges are actually very clean and have no rubbing and whilst the wide spine is now somewhat compressed it is still 100% legible which is a real rarity.  There is some corner wear although not a great deal it has to be said.  The area with the most area of wear is on the first opening edge and you can see it has been handled a fair amount.  The other one is supremely clean with no handling wear at all.  The laminated front cover is in great shape with no splits and only a small amount of faint creases around the edges and the laminated back cover is the same.  The inside of the gatefold is in lovely condition and the flipbacks by the top edge are in superb order.  The colours remain very strong and vibrant and there are no marks to be seen.  This very rare cover is 52 years old this year and I would grade it as a strong VG++ due to the opening edge wear but there are certainly mainly aspects of it that grade as Ex if not better.

Red inner sleeve & Cut Out card

Now this is very rare as the red 'fool' inner sleeve has no splits or tears and is in superb condition with only light creasing.  It is better than nearly all the ones you see today.  There is no fading of the colours either.

The Cut Out card is in near perfect condition with only a very minor amount of fading around a couple of edges.

The Labels

The yellow/black Parlophone labels are in excellent condition with not too much spindle wear and there are no marks or writing.  The KT tax code is on the S2 label.
